Who do they get to be waiters at 5 star restaurants? I’d imagine you’d have to have pre-existing knowledge of fancyness, so they couldn’t just hire random college students. But if you’re fancy enough to know how fancy waiter’s are suppose to act, then you probably don’t need to work a job waiting tables. Or do fancy waiters get payed a lot?

Fancy waiters get paid ALOT. You have to work your way up to fancy restaurant. I worked out the math of a waitress at a really fancy vegas restaurant one night and worked out that worst case she was pulling in nearly 6 figures annually.

Fancy restaurants are a place where you could easily get a $100 tip for good service. I’m sure the hiring is very competitive.

Sometimes you come to a cross roads and you have to decide what fancy American restaurant you want to eat at in Siberia.

We had the fortune of meeting the most amazing “fancy waiter” at the Wynn in Las Vegas.

He was so good, I’m surprised that 1) my wife didn’t go home with him, and 2) that I didn’t go home with him either.

The way he acted (and the way we tipped him), would not be surprised to find out that he would make something like 6 figures.

If you can hustle, you don’t need a degree. Most people can’t hustle. My wife and I have college degrees and we hustle. We did it wrong.

It depends. If you have chops it shows. Most people in Vegas don’t tip for shit because the food is so expensive. The only returants where the staff is regularly pulling in close to six figures would be the ones where they don’t wear clothes.

ha! on our table it was a group tip automatically added. it was like $150 a plate x 10 so $200 on our table alone, and we didn’t drink.

I know two sides of this coin:

I know a girl who used to date one of my good friends, who after studying University and living and working abroad in various restaurants as a way to travel for extended periods of time came back to wait tables at a VERY fancy American restaurant in one of the richest parts of the city; she doesn’t make much (compared to what other Business-related University graduates make in our group) but she gets to feel important and it fulfils her.

I also know a guy who was a waiter at a fancy Spanish restaurant who was there simply because he was model-level good looking, high-school-equivalent drop out and all in all made more than the other girl.

A family friend of ours is pushing sixty and is a server (waiter... waitress... THEY DO STUFF AT YOUR TABLE) and makes great money at some fancy restaurant.

Serving is one of those jobs some career-types (you know the ones) internally scoff at, yet it’s a very hard job to do well, you can make bank, and dammit good service is so hard to get today.

Only in Vegas can you spend $150 a plate without ordering alcohol.

Work your way up at the particular restaurant by starting at the bottom (ie cleaning tables) and impress your superiors with charisma and professionalism. That, or go restaurant to restaurant increasing “fancyness/coolness” factor from each place.

And you can make serious bank. Around here some of the hip semi-exspensive restaurants it’s common for wait staff to be brushing up against 5 figures after a year or so. Working 30-40 hours. The money is definitely there

One thing to keep in mind, the hip places that attract a young, wealthy crowd are where you want to be. You get high roller tables where one guy picks up the tab for everyone (say $2000) and gives a large tip. Then everyone else also leaves a large tip. If you get to know these high rollers and build up report, you’ll get even more. The restaurant doesn’t even have to be that pricey, it just needs interesting drinks and good, hip atmosphere.

I had a friend that waited tables in a tuxedo. He was “not smart”. Don’t be afraid to apply at the fancy joints. That guy didn’t even have a GED, but made ALOT of money.

Fancy waiters in NYC at high end restaurants make $100,000+. It’s hard work and not a lot of people at that level, like you said.

A friend went from going to school full time to waiting part time at a really fancy restaurant. even was able to afford his own place and a crap civic which was luxury compared to the rest of us who had nothing.

Luck and working up from busboy to serving. Slowly from busboy to start assisting other waiters till finally trusted with his own shifts.

He was also looked like he fell out of an american eagle catalog.
